Before You Fly: What Changed for Travelers in 2026

Every fall we go through what changed at the borders our clients cross most. 2026 moved more than most years. Here is the version we send clients the week before they fly, with the dates and amounts, so you can see what we are watching on your behalf.

One rule covers most of it: every government form below is free or has a fixed official price. Any website charging to process it for you is not the government.

Europe: the border is biometric now

  • Since April 2026, the twenty-nine Schengen countries record your face and fingerprints on first entry instead of stamping your passport. There is nothing to apply for and nothing to pre-register. It happens at the booth.

  • The queues are real. European airports reported waits over two hours at peak this summer, worst at some Italian and Spanish airports. We add time to arrival-day plans and avoid tight onward connections inside Europe.

  • Ireland and Cyprus are not in the system and still stamp.

ETIAS: still not live, so do not pay anyone

The EU's travel authorization has not started. The 2026 launch date was quietly dropped in July and no new date has been published. When it does begin, it will cost 20 euros, last three years, and be issued only through the official EU site. Any site offering to sell you an ETIAS today is a scam.

United Kingdom: the ETA is required and enforced

  • US citizens need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation. It costs 20 pounds as of April 2026 and lasts two years.

  • Airlines have refused boarding without it since February 2026. Apply in the official UK ETA app, nowhere else, for every traveler including infants.

  • Changing planes at Heathrow without leaving the secure area is exempt for now.

Passport validity

  • Europe: your passport must be valid three months past the day you leave Schengen and have been issued within the last ten years. Most airlines and most people treat it as six months. So do we.

  • Mexico and Japan: valid for the length of your stay. Thailand: six months.

  • US renewals are running four to six weeks routine, two to three expedited, plus mailing time. Online renewal is open for adults whose passport expires within a year.

  • Tell your advisor your passport expiry date at the first call. It changes more itineraries than you would think.

Mexico

  • No more paper tourist card for air arrivals. Your passport is stamped with the number of days you are allowed.

  • Cancun and the Riviera Maya: the Quintana Roo VISITAX is about $15 per person, paid only at visitax.gob.mx. Nobody checks for it at the airport, and third-party sites charge double.

  • Los Cabos and La Paz: the Embrace It fee is about $25 per person over age 12, paid at embraceit.bcs.gob.mx and spot-checked by QR code.

  • Puerto Vallarta: a small municipal fee was approved for 2026. Collection has been inconsistent.

The Caribbean: the 72-hour forms

  • Jamaica: the C5 form at enterjamaica.com, free, up to 30 days before arrival.

  • Dominican Republic: the E-Ticket at eticket.migracion.gob.do, free, for both entry and exit.

  • Aruba: the online ED card plus a $20 sustainability fee, paid before you check in for your flight.

  • St. Lucia, Barbados, Antigua and Sint Maarten: free online forms within 72 hours of arrival.

  • Turks and Caicos: nothing to fill in.

Asia and the islands

  • Japan: the departure tax tripled to 3,000 yen in July. It is built into your ticket. The JESTA authorization everyone is writing about starts in 2028, not now.

  • Thailand: a free digital arrival card within 72 hours. The tourist entry fee is still only a proposal.

  • Bali: a 150,000 rupiah levy, paid online before you land.

  • The Maldives: $12 per person per night in green tax, about $100 in departure charges in economy, and a free traveler declaration within 96 hours of arrival. We put all of it in the quote.

  • French Polynesia: nothing new.

City fees worth knowing

  • Venice charges day visitors 5 to 10 euros on peak days from April to July. Overnight guests are exempt, which is one more reason to stay the night.

  • Mykonos and Santorini charge cruise passengers 20 euros per port in summer, billed to your onboard account.

  • Barcelona, Amsterdam, Paris and Milan all raised hotel taxes in 2026. We build them into the quote so the number you see is the number you pay.

Flying inside the United States

  • REAL ID has been enforced since May 2025. A passport works too.

  • If you show up without acceptable ID, TSA now charges $45 for an identity check that lasts ten days. Do not do that.

  • Shoes stay on. Liquids are still 3.4 ounces.

What we do about all of this

We handle the forms. Every client gets a pre-departure note with the links above, their specific dates, and every fee already in the quote. If a rule changes between booking and departure, you hear it from us, not from the check-in desk.
