How We'd Plan 10 Days in the Maldives: A Luxury Blueprint

  • 6 min read

Ten days is the right number for the Maldives. It is enough time to settle into two different atolls, get past the jet lag, and actually feel the archipelago rather than just Instagram it. For a couple flying from Oklahoma City, we would build the trip around two resorts: five nights at Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru in Baa Atoll, followed by five nights at Soneva Jani in Noonu Atoll. Budget $40,000 to $120,000 all-in for two people, depending on villa category and season.

The Maldives is not a destination you plan the way you plan Paris or Tokyo. There are no neighborhoods to walk, no temples to visit. The decision-making here is almost entirely about the water: which atoll, which resort, what category of villa, and how you sequence the journey. Getting those choices right is the difference between the trip of a lifetime and ten very expensive days feeling stranded.

We have sent clients to the Maldives for decades at Haus Travel. Here is how we would actually structure the trip.

Start with the Atoll Question

The Maldives spans 26 atolls across 500 miles of the Indian Ocean, with roughly 160 resort islands operating as one-island, one-resort properties. The atoll you choose dictates the marine life, the transfer logistics, and the resort options available to you. Three atolls matter most for luxury travelers:

  • North Male Atoll. Closest to Velana International Airport, with speedboat transfers under 45 minutes. Home to Gili Lankanfushi, Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi, and Baros. The right choice if you have a late-afternoon arrival or a first night that needs to be stress-free.

  • Baa Atoll. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Hanifaru Bay sits here, where hundreds of manta rays and whale sharks gather between June and November. Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru is the anchor property. Seaplane transfer required, about 30 minutes from Male.

  • Noonu Atoll. About 180 kilometers north of Male, home to three of the most acclaimed properties in the archipelago: Soneva Jani, Cheval Blanc Randheli, and Velaa Private Island. Remote, uncrowded, and a different atmosphere entirely. Seaplane required.

One logistics note that matters more than people expect: seaplanes only fly in daylight. The last departure from Velana is typically around 4 p.m. If you land at Male after 3 p.m., you are not reaching Noonu that day. Plan your international arrival accordingly, or add a buffer night in North Male Atoll. Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi, a 30-minute speedboat from the airport, handles this well.

The Itinerary We'd Actually Build

For 10 nights, we lean toward two islands. Here is the skeleton that consistently works well for our clients:

Nights 1 to 5: Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, Baa Atoll

  • Fly OKC to DFW or IAH, connect to Doha on Qatar Airways, then Doha to Male. Aim for an afternoon arrival at Velana; the Doha-to-Male leg is about four hours.

  • Seaplane from Velana to Landaa Giraavaru: 30 minutes.

  • The resort has 103 villas. Beach Villas with Pool start around $1,800 per night before taxes; overwater villas run $2,800 to $5,000 per night. The PADI 5-Star dive center, Baa Atoll Explorer marine biology program, and Hanifaru Bay manta ray excursions set this property apart. Non-divers can snorkel manta rays from a Zodiac without a dive certification.

Add roughly 30 percent to all published rates for the 17 percent Tourism Goods and Services Tax, the 10 percent service charge, and the $12-per-person-per-night Green Tax.

Nights 6 to 10: Soneva Jani, Noonu Atoll

  • Seaplane transfer from Baa to Noonu: roughly 30 minutes.

  • Soneva Jani's overwater Water Retreats start at $5,500 per night. The five-bedroom Water Retreat runs $33,000. The resort has 24 food and beverage concepts, a retractable roof above the bed in signature villas, waterslides off the deck, and an open-air cinema on the water.

  • The house reef at Soneva Jani is exceptional: pristine, uncrowded, and a five-minute swim from your villa deck.

  • For a lower entry point into the Noonu tier: the Beach Retreat at Soneva Jani starts around $2,800 per night and delivers the full Soneva experience without the overwater premium.

What This Actually Costs

For two people, 10 nights across two islands, here are the real budget bands:

  • Entry luxury: $25,000 to $45,000. Properties like Constance Moofushi in South Ari Atoll or Kuramathi in Rasdhoo. Comfortable overwater villas, strong diving programs, genuine seclusion.

  • Mid luxury: $45,000 to $80,000. Four Seasons Kuda Huraa plus a second island, or Gili Lankanfushi paired with a Baa Atoll property. Excellent quality and service at both stops.

  • Top end: $80,000 to $200,000 and above. Two islands from the Soneva, Cheval Blanc, or Velaa tier. Full overwater suites, seaplane transfers, and all taxes included in the estimate.

What moves the number most: villa category. The gap between a beach villa and an overwater villa typically runs $1,000 to $3,000 per night. At Soneva Jani the premium is larger. At Cheval Blanc Randheli, all 45 villas are overwater, so the question does not apply.

Where to save: skip the full-board dining package if the resort offers a room-only alternative. At $250 to $600 per person per day, the package rarely pencils out when you also want to try the property's specialty restaurants.

When to Go

Peak season runs November through April: dry skies, calm seas, and the best underwater visibility. Christmas and New Year bring rate premiums of 25 to 50 percent and require booking 12 to 18 months out.

The shoulder season (May through October) is underrated for the right traveler. Rates drop 20 to 30 percent, the resorts are quieter, and in Baa Atoll specifically, June through November is the peak period for manta ray feeding at Hanifaru Bay. North-facing atolls like Noonu can see choppier seas in August and September, so sequencing matters: Baa first, then Noonu works better than the reverse during summer months.

From Oklahoma City, the routing is the same year-round: OKC to DFW or IAH, connecting to Doha on Qatar Airways, then Doha to Male. Total travel time runs 25 to 28 hours each way. Qatar's Qsuite business class on the long-haul legs makes a real difference on a trip this distance; build it into the budget if the overall trip warrants it.

What to Ask Before You Book

  1. What does my specific villa look like within the resort layout? Position on the overwater boardwalk matters. Some villas face open ocean; others face neighboring villas or the island interior.

  2. Are seaplane transfers included in my rate, or billed separately? At some properties, transfers add $400 to $850 per person round trip.

  3. What are my options if I arrive after the seaplane cutoff? Having a Plan B for late arrivals avoids a stressful first night.

  4. Which activities and excursions are included, and which are billed separately? Marine excursions, diving, spa, and specialty dining can add $300 to $800 per day per couple.

  5. How far out do I need to book? For peak season (November through April), 8 to 12 months is standard. For shoulder season, 3 to 6 months typically leaves solid options.

How Haus Travel Can Help

Booking the Maldives at the luxury end is not transactional. Villa position, transfer sequencing, and whether a full-board package actually saves you money vary by resort, by season, and by villa category. We have direct relationships with Four Seasons, Soneva, and Cheval Blanc, and we know which overwater villas at Soneva Jani face the open lagoon versus the inner channels. That specificity matters when you are spending $15,000 to $30,000 on a week of accommodations.

Haus Travel has been planning Maldives itineraries since the destination opened to American travelers, and we know the routing out of Oklahoma City cold. Email Blake directly at blake@haus-travel.com or call the office to start building your itinerary.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do you need in the Maldives?

Ten nights is our baseline recommendation for two islands. Seven nights works well for a single resort. Fewer than five nights is rarely worth the journey from the United States.

Is the Maldives worth the cost for luxury travelers?

For the right traveler, yes. The combination of barefoot luxury, world-class snorkeling and diving, and genuine remoteness is unlike anywhere else. For travelers who want cultural variety, city access, or dense activity alongside their beach time, the Maldives can feel limiting regardless of budget.

What is the best luxury resort in the Maldives?

Soneva Jani in Noonu Atoll is the standard-bearer for overwater villa experiences. Cheval Blanc Randheli is the most refined property in the archipelago. Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru is the best choice for families with serious marine programming. The right answer depends on your priorities.

Do US travelers need a visa for the Maldives?

No. The Maldives grants a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival to US passport holders. No advance application is required.

When is the cheapest time to visit the Maldives?

May through October runs 20 to 30 percent below peak season rates. June through November in Baa Atoll is also the best period for manta ray encounters at Hanifaru Bay.

Can you fly direct from the US to the Maldives?

No direct flights exist. The standard routing from Oklahoma City is OKC to DFW or IAH, connecting to Doha on Qatar Airways, then Doha to Male. Emirates via Dubai is an alternative. Budget 25 to 28 hours of travel each way.

What is a seaplane transfer in the Maldives?

A floatplane operated by Trans Maldivian Airways that departs from the Velana International Seaplane Terminal adjacent to the main airport. Flight time to most resorts runs 15 to 45 minutes. Seaplanes operate only in daylight; the last departure from Male is typically around 4 p.m. Guests arriving late should overnight in North Male Atoll before continuing to remote atolls the following morning.
