How We'd Plan 8 Days in Egypt: Cairo and the Nile, Done Right

Egypt is the trip our clients postpone for decades, then come home asking why they waited. With eight days, here is exactly how we would build it: three nights in Cairo for Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum, a short flight to Luxor, four nights sailing the Nile to Aswan, and a final night in Cairo on the way home. At a true luxury level, expect roughly $8,000 to $14,000 per person before international airfare, and travel between late October and April.
The order matters more than most people think, and the boat matters most of all. Egypt is not a destination where you piece together hotels and hope. It runs on logistics, timed entries, and guides, and the difference between a good trip and a great one is almost entirely in the handling. The eight-day skeleton, day by day
Fly into Cairo, finish in Cairo. Every internal leg is a short EgyptAir hop, and nothing about this pacing is rushed.
Days 1 to 3: Cairo. Land, sleep, then take the pyramids early the next morning before the buses arrive. Give the Grand Egyptian Museum its own half day. It sits about 1.5 miles from the plateau, timed tickets (around $25 for foreign adults) must now be booked online in advance, and on Saturdays and Wednesdays the galleries stay open late into the evening. We base clients at Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at Nile Plaza; Nile-view rooms generally run $350 to $700 a night depending on season.
Day 4: fly to Luxor and board. EgyptAir runs about 21 nonstops a week from Cairo to Luxor, roughly an hour in the air. Board the boat, then see Karnak in the late afternoon light.
Days 4 to 7: the Nile, Luxor to Aswan. Valley of the Kings and the west bank first, then Edfu and Kom Ombo on the way upstream, finishing in Aswan. Four nights is the sweet spot for first-timers.
Day 7: Abu Simbel. A short flight from Aswan, ideally at dawn. If you can align with October 22 or February 22, the rising sun reaches the inner statues of the Ramses II temple. Book those dates a year out.
Day 8: Aswan to Cairo, then home. EgyptAir flies Aswan to Cairo daily. Overnight near the airport or back on the Nile, then the long flight west.
Which Nile boat should you choose?
This is the decision that defines the trip, because the boat is your hotel, your restaurant, and your front-row seat for four days.
Sanctuary Sun Boat IV. The classic four-night Luxor to Aswan run in Art Deco style, from roughly $2,000 to $3,500 per person depending on cabin and season. The best value in the true luxury tier.
The Oberoi Zahra. The most polished ship on the river: a real spa, a small cabin count, and a seven-night itinerary that adds time and depth. Plan on $5,000 or more per person. Choose it if the cruise is the trip rather than a component of it.
Peak-week math. The weeks of December 20 to January 5 and Easter add 25 to 35 percent to cruise fares. October sailings often price 15 to 25 percent below peak winter.
When should you go?
Late October through April is the season. November is close to perfect: highs from the low 70s to the mid 80s, essentially zero rain, and the west bank of Luxor still comfortable at 8 am. December through February brings the biggest crowds and the highest rates. Summer will save you real money, but Aswan at 110 degrees is no one's idea of luxury, and we do not send clients then.
Getting there from Oklahoma City
This got easier in 2026. EgyptAir has long flown nonstop to Cairo from JFK and Newark, about ten flights a week combined, and added nonstop service from Chicago O'Hare and Los Angeles in May 2026. For OKC departures, that makes OKC to O'Hare to Cairo the cleanest one-stop routing Egypt has ever had. Nonstop business class typically prices near $6,000 round trip, while one-stop business itineraries on connecting carriers can dip below $3,000 in shoulder season. On the overnight eastbound, the flat bed earns its keep: you land midday Cairo time and the trip starts a day sooner.
What to ask before you book
Is the boat actually sailing my dates, and in which direction? Some departures run Aswan to Luxor, which reorders every touring day.
Are the Abu Simbel flights confirmed and included, or just "available locally"? The dawn departures sell out first.
Is my Egyptologist private or shared? A private guide roughly doubles what you absorb at Karnak and the Valley of the Kings.
Are Grand Egyptian Museum timed entries already booked? Walk-up tickets no longer exist.
What is the boat's single-supplement or third-traveler policy? Cabin inventories are tiny and price oddly.
