How We'd Plan 6 Days in Mallorca in Late September (2026)

Six nights is the right length for a first trip to Mallorca, split three ways: two nights in Palma's old town, two in the Tramuntana mountains above Deia, and two on the quieter south coast near Cap Rocat. Plan on $700 to $3,300 a night depending on tier, and book the back half of September, after the 15th, when European school holidays end and hotel rates drop 15 to 25 percent off August peak. Here is how Haus Travel would build it, gate by gate, from Oklahoma City.

How many days do you actually need, and how do you split them?

Four nights feels rushed once you factor in a full day of transatlantic flying on each end. Ten nights is more island than most first-time visitors need, since Mallorca rewards depth in a few places rather than a grand tour of all of it. Six works because it buys two full days in each of the island's three distinct personalities: the walkable old city, the dramatic northwest coast, and the calmer, less-photographed south.

Palma anchors the trip logistically, since every flight from the mainland or from a European gateway lands there. Put your first two nights in the old town so jet lag has somewhere pleasant to burn off: narrow stone streets, the Cathedral of Santa Maria, and dinner reservations you can walk to. Then move north to the Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage range that pushes right up against the sea, for the two nights that will end up in every photo you show people. Close the trip on the south coast, near Cala Blava, where the pace slows and the water calms before the flight home.

Is the back half of September really better than August?

Yes, and it is not close. Daytime highs still run 79 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit in September, with the Mediterranean holding its summer heat, so water temperatures actually peak at 25 to 27 degrees, warmer than June. What changes is everyone else. Early September stays busy with cruise calls and peak pricing, but once European school holidays end around the 15th, crowds thin noticeably at beach clubs, restaurants stop requiring a week's notice, and hotels quietly cut rates. Expect four or five days with brief afternoon showers across the whole month, not the sustained rain that arrives in October. Book September 16 through 30 if your calendar allows it; it is the best week-for-week value the island offers all year.

Where do you splurge, and where do you save?

This is where an advisor earns the planning fee, because Mallorca's price spread is enormous and not always tied to how good the stay actually is.

Splurge nights, north coast:

  • Belmond La Residencia in Deia runs $822 a night for a classic room up to roughly $3,300 for an executive suite, and it is still the address that defines the Tramuntana for a reason: two Michelin-adjacent restaurants, a working olive estate, and views of the village that inspired Robert Graves to stay for good.

  • Son Bunyola, Richard Branson's 29-room finca on an 810-acre estate near Banyalbufar, runs roughly $500 to $1,200 a night for a mountain-view room, with the standalone Tower Suite near $2,745 and full villas from $2,084 to just under $6,000. It trades a little polish for more privacy and direct trail access down to the coast.

Save nights, Palma old town:

  • Hotel Cort sits directly on Placa de Cort steps from the cathedral, runs $362 to $599 a night, and delivers a genuinely warm, historic-boutique stay without the resort markup.

  • Nobis Hotel Palma, a Design Hotels property in the same old-town radius, is the design-forward alternative for travelers who want a more contemporary room without leaving the walkable core.

South coast, worth the splurge for the send-off: Cap Rocat, a converted 19th-century fortress on its own private peninsula near Cala Blava, starts from roughly $707 a night and is one of the only properties on the island where the setting alone justifies the rate.

How do you actually get from Oklahoma City?

There is no direct routing, so budget the day. From Will Rogers World, the standard build is OKC to Dallas-Fort Worth, then a transatlantic leg to a European gateway such as Madrid, London, or Frankfurt, followed by a short intra-European hop into Palma. All-in, plan on roughly 18 hours of total travel time with connections, and round-trip published fares in economy start near $800, though that number moves quickly once you're booking premium cabins for the long-haul leg, which we generally recommend given the trip's overall cost.

The detail that trips people up: arrival timing. Land in Palma in the early afternoon and you can still get to the old town for a late lunch and a walk before collapsing at a reasonable hour. Land at night and you lose most of day one to recovery. We route around this every time we build a Mallorca itinerary.

What does the day-by-day actually look like?

Days one and two, Palma: settle in, walk the cathedral and the Almudaina Palace, spend an afternoon at Es Baluard contemporary art museum, and do a proper tapas crawl through the old town's back streets rather than the harbor-front tourist row.

Days three and four, Tramuntana: base at La Residencia or Son Bunyola, day-trip to Valldemossa and the Carthusian monastery, drive (or better, hire a driver for) the hairpin coastal road to Soller, and build in at least one long hike, since this range is what separates Mallorca from every flatter Mediterranean island.

Days five and six, south coast: check into Cap Rocat, take a half-day boat out toward the Cabrera archipelago if the season and weather allow, and keep the last night deliberately quiet. Dinner on the fortress terrace is the right way to close a Mallorca trip.

What to ask before you book

A few questions we run through with every client before locking dates: does the quoted rate include breakfast, since several of these properties price it separately; what is the cancellation window given that September weather can still shift a boat excursion; do you actually want a rental car on Tramuntana's narrow mountain roads, or is a private driver worth the extra cost; and how far ahead do you need to reserve dinner at in-demand spots like Sa Foradada or Tristan, since September tables fill faster than you'd expect for a shoulder-season month.

How Haus Travel can help

We have been building itineraries like this since 1975, and Mallorca is one of the trips where that experience actually shows up in the details: knowing which Tower Suite at Son Bunyola gets the better light, which La Residencia rooms sit too close to the pool bar, and which driver in Deia will rearrange his whole week for a longtime client. Our CLIA-certified advisors hold direct relationships with Belmond, Virgin Limited Edition, and the boutique properties that never show up on the big booking platforms, which means upgrades, amenity credits, and priority restaurant access that you cannot get calling the hotel directly. For an Oklahoma City-based trip like this one, we also handle the routing decisions, from which gateway city to connect through to how to time the return flight so you're not walking into the office the same morning you land.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Mallorca for a first visit?

Six nights is the sweet spot for a first trip: enough time to split between Palma, the Tramuntana mountains, and the south coast without feeling rushed or over-scheduled.

Is September a good time to visit Mallorca?

Yes, particularly the second half of the month. Water temperatures peak around 25 to 27 degrees Fahrenheit, daytime highs stay near 80 degrees, and crowds and hotel rates both drop once European school holidays end around September 15.

What is the best area to stay in Mallorca?

There is no single best area for a longer trip; the strongest itineraries split nights between old-town Palma for walkability, the Tramuntana coast for scenery, and the quieter south for a slower close to the trip.

How much does a luxury trip to Mallorca cost per person?

Hotel rates alone range from about $362 a night for a Palma boutique room to $3,300 or more for a top suite at Belmond La Residencia, so a six-night trip with flights typically lands between $6,000 and $15,000 per person depending on tier.

How do you get from Oklahoma City to Mallorca?

There is no direct flight. The standard routing connects through Dallas-Fort Worth to a European gateway city such as Madrid, London, or Frankfurt, then a short hop into Palma, for roughly 18 hours of total travel time.

Do you need a car in Mallorca?

Only if you are comfortable on narrow mountain switchbacks. Many travelers hire a private driver for the Tramuntana days and rely on walking and taxis in Palma.

Is Mallorca better than Ibiza for a quiet luxury trip?

For travelers who want scenery, hiking, and a slower pace over nightlife, yes. Mallorca is larger, quieter outside its resort towns, and better suited to a multi-base itinerary than Ibiza's club-driven south coast.
